China Snubs Israel - Rejects Calls For Iran Sanctions

Prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, was not long permitted to rejoice over the agreement to sanction Iran which he had wrested from the Russian leadership. A few days later, China made it clear that it would in no case help to carry out such sanctions. Consequently, Netanyahu believed it necessary to pay a visit to the Chinese leadership, in order to bring them on course through an Israeli word of command.
But the Chinese leadership did not even once want to see Netanyahu. So “Bibi” had to stay home. On Feb. 25, 2010, Israel sent a high-ranking government delegation to Beijing, including Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon, as well as the currency bank chief, Stanley Fischer, in order to move the Chinese leadership to hard sanctions against Iran.”
But the Israelis were snubbed once more. They were left standing on stage for not a single member of the government made himself available to them for discussions. This was how the vassal media rewrote the fiasco:
“The Israelis hoped to be able to meet during the two-day stay with the advisor of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Dai Bingguo.” The Israelis have become so modest that even a government advisor would have been enough for them, but even he would not do them the honor.

Eroding Civil Rights in America: Scary Indefinite Detentions Bill Introduced in Senate

A newly introduced bill by John McCain and Joe Lieberman, will allow for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens, without trial if they are suspected of terrorist activities. There will be no distinction made between U.S. citizens and foreigners.

Civil liberties advocates and U.S. constitutional law scholars lost no time in condemning proposed legislation introduced in the Senate Thursday that would hand the government the power to indefinitely detain terrorism suspects without charge and to conduct trials through military commissions only.

Typical was the response from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which said the proposed legislation would "deal a swift blow to due process and the rule of law."

And Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA (AI), said, "Military commissions were created to consider evidence too inadequate to submit to a valid court. The commissions do not conform to the due process standards established under international law and do not have legitimacy in the eyes of the global community."

The "Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention and Prosecution Act of 2010," introduced by Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona and Independent Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, would also create a new system of interrogation, requiring intelligence officials to be consulted about how to handle terrorism suspects after their capture.

The bill was precipitated by the Senators' objections to the Barack Obama administration's decision to charge accused Christmas Day attacker Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab in the criminal court system.

Abdulmutallab, while in FBI custody, was read his rights, including his right to remain silent and his right to an attorney. These constitutional rights are enjoyed by all persons, whether they are citizens or not, who are arrested on U.S. territory.

U.S. officials insist Abdulmutallab provided valuable intelligence under civilian questioning despite being told he had the right to remain silent.

The McCain-Lieberman legislation would have a "high value detainee" team, made up of members of different intelligence agencies, interrogate and determine whether alleged terrorist suspects are "unprivileged enemy belligerents." If so, and if the suspect is then charged, the legislation would mandate the use of the military commissions for trial.

Since the January 2010 highs, the first hour is where most of the losses have occurred, even during the most recent upswing. Since the February low, each other period in the rest of the trading day has been net profitable, though the closing hour the least so. The 1:30 to 3:00 pm time of day has been the most profitable intraday period for longs since the 2009 rally began.

Tea time in America, and the Elite is Foolish to Dismiss its Importance

Ever since the first “Tea Party” convention was held last month in Nashville, Tennessee, with Sarah Palin as one of the keynote speakers, America’s political and media establishments have been reacting with a combination of apprehension and disdain. The speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has called the Tea Party adherents Nazis, while mainstream media tend to portray them as ignorant and provincial, a passive rabble with raw emotion but little analytical skill, stirred up and manipulated by demagogues to advance their agendas.

To be sure, the Tea Party’s brand of aggrieved populism – and its composition of mostly white, angry, middle-class voters – has deep roots in the US, flaring up during times of change. But observers who have drawn comparisons to the Know-Nothings, the racist, paranoid, anti-Catholic, and anti-immigrant party that surged in the 1850s, are reading the movement far too superficially.

Indeed, those who deride and dismiss this movement do so at their peril. While some Tea Partiers may be racist or focused on eccentric themes – such as the validity of Barack Obama’s birth certificate – far more of them, those who were part of the original grass-roots effort, are focused on issues that have merit. If you actually listen to them, instead of just reading accounts transmitted through the distorting mirror of the mainstream media, you hear profound grievances and some proposals that are actually ahead of their time.

For example, Tea Party activists, using a group called End the Fed, were among the first to focus critical attention on the unelected and unaccountable US Federal Reserve Board. Now legislation is being put forward to establish greater transparency at the Fed – surely a laudable outcome.

The three-party meeting that took place in Damascus on Friday gathering the Syrian president Bashar al Assad, the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Hizbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was a war council to devise counterattack plans and assign tasks in the event of an Israeli offensive on one or all parties, wrote Abdelbari Atwan, the editor-in-chief of the pan-Arab newspaper Al Quds al Arabi.

The Iranian president said he expects war to break out somewhere between spring and summer of this year. Meanwhile, the Hizbollah chief vowed to strike the Israeli capital, its airports and power stations if Israel dared to attack Beirut’s critical infrastructure.

“Indeed, we are being exposed to a new discourse here, an unprecedented sense of self-confidence and an unheard-of preparedness for retaliation.”

For its part, the Syrian leadership appears to have made up its mind to close off the US administration’s “trite and cheap” flirtation with Damascus and opted for bolstering its tactical partnership with Tehran.

Were Hedge Funds Colluding to Drive Down the Euro?

Fears of a hedge fund "conspiracy" to destroy the euro gathered pace yesterday when the American authorities ordered some funds not to destroy records of their trading in the single currency. The move comes after the US Federal Reserve promised to probe claims that the use of credit derivatives by Goldman Sachs had, ironically, helped Greece enter the eurozone a decade ago. Although the latest Greek austerity plan helped to calm markets and nudged the euro higher against the dollar, traders warned that the euro's traumas were far from over. Indeed, it seems that the EU and the hedge funds are about to intensify their economic warfare, with the opening of a new front in America.

The US Department of Justice has asked a number of the hedge funds whose executives attended a dinner hosted by New York-based research and brokerage firm Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co on 8 February, to preserve their trading histories. According to an agenda obtained by Bloomberg, those present discussed a number of "themes", including the chances of the euro falling against the dollar. Aaron Cowen, an executive at SAC Capital Advisors, David Einhorn, head of Greenlight Capital, and Don Morgan, who runs Brigade Capital Management LLC went to the dinner, as did a representative from Soros Fund Management.
